The Lenneroute opens up multifaceted perspectives along its course to the mouth of the Ruhr. Historic castles and fortresses offer in-depth insights into the region's history. The route also presents impressive examples of industrial culture, which vividly illustrate the socio-economic development of the region. The later section leads through urban centers that bring the dynamic city life of the Ruhrgebiet to life. Finally, the final section promises relaxing moments on tranquil paths, complemented by the opportunity to take a break. Here, the Lenne flows into the Ruhr away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The core route can be extended by various additional excursions. Like the main route, these are characterized by excellent infrastructure. The initial half of the Lenneroute leads primarily along designated cycle paths and traffic-calmed side roads.

Safety guidelines

The first half of the Lenneroute runs mainly on cycle paths and quiet side roads.

Between Plettenberg and Iserlohn-Letmathe, cyclists are increasingly routed along roads with heavier traffic. Work is currently underway to improve the route by building new cycle paths or relocating some sections of the route. The very good rail connection between Plettenberg and Iserlohn bridges the critical areas. We recommend this for families with children. For the more experienced cyclist, the "Fernblick variant" from Werdohl to Burg Altena offers a unique "high-altitude experience".

In the Hagen area, the route runs almost continuously on a paved cycle path to the mouth of the Lenne.

The majority of the route is asphalted. The few sections on unpaved forest, field and riverside paths are easy to master topographically. With the exception of the few days when there is snow, the route is easy to cycle all year round.

Author Tip

The "Lichtblick Lenneschiene", an object in the landscape, offers views of the Lenne valley on a new connecting section.
