The areas of responsibility are based on the "Biological Stations NRW" funding guidelines issued by the Ministry for the Environment and Nature Conservation, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia:

Protected area management

The preservation of nature conservation resources is often only possible if appropriate protected areas are designated:

  • Nature reserve

  • Fauna-flora habitat areas

  • bird sanctuaries

  • Legally protected biotopes

  • other areas for nature conservation purposes

Many of these habitats are maintained and managed in the traditional way. The attractive and species-rich mountain flower meadows are one of many examples.

Contractual nature conservation

Species protection

More and more native animal and plant species are highly dependent on human protection due to habitat loss, and the Siegen-Wittgenstein Biological Station is working to preserve and increase the population of native species. It supervises projects that are precisely tailored to the habitat requirements of these species and aims to counteract the extinction of animal and plant species.

Scientific and advisory tasks

The Siegen-Wittgenstein Biological Station conducts scientific studies on selected animal species and endangered plant species groups and habitats. It is also active in an advisory capacity in a variety of ways.

Public relations work

Public relations work makes it possible to inform the population about regional nature conservation. In addition, the Biological Station aims to encourage the population to behave in an environmentally friendly and nature conservation-friendly manner and to raise awareness.

The annual program of events includes an average of 60 different hikes, lectures, information stands and seminars (excluding farmers' markets and major events) in the areas of nature and culture. The events are organized together with almost 50 cooperation partners. The calendar of events can be obtained from the Siegerland-Wittgenstein Tourist Association, Siegen.
