Werl lies at the intersection of the Sauerland, Münsterland and Ruhgebiet regions. Here on the Haarhöhe, the view falls on these landscape areas and the Hellwegbörde, which is characterized by agriculture. The adjacent Werl Forest is the gateway to the Sauerland. In the otherwise sparsely wooded Bördeland landscape, it assumes important functions for recreation and sports. The ridge of high ground raised in the earth's history stretches from Dortmund to Paderborn. Fertile glacial loess deposits make the Börde the "granary of Westfalen". In the valley lies the pilgrimage town of Werl with its historic city center.
