Developed into a drinking fountain in 1878, the Charlottenquelle was named in honor of the deaconess Charlotte from the children's sanatorium. In addition to its function as a source of drinking water, the hydrogen sulphide-containing, carbonated brine spring was also freely available to spa guests as a new natural remedy. The spring later became a sweetener.

The Charlottenquelle is part of the Sassendorf Salt Trails, a historical tour of Bad Sassendorf.
