On the outskirts of Finnentrop-Fretter, a newly designed recreational area extends around the historic bone mill and the associated pond. This facility, which was developed between 2018 and 2020 with LEADER funding, offers an area with a high quality of stay. The area was designed in close contact with nature in consultation with members of the Fretter local history association.
The design elements include seating made from natural materials, a short footbridge over the pond and a barrier-free circular path that surrounds the shore. A natural treading pool and a newly created inlet to the bone mill, which functions as a near-natural water playground with stepping stones and shallow water depth, complete the offer. The nationally renowned SauerlandRadring and Ruhr-Sieg-Radweg cycle paths run directly alongside the pond, integrated into the area. The adjacent bone mill, a registered technical cultural monument, is home to a unique cast-iron stamping mill in North Rhine-Westphalia, a so-called "Californian Poche" from around 1860, which was originally used in mining to crush ore and was later adapted for the production of bone meal.
