Heinrich von Westphalen, court master of Paderborn, acquired the Laer estate in 1602. He ordered the construction of a representative manor house in 1608, integrating older building fabric. The portal and the striking dome of the portal tower were completed in 1669. The castle complex was extensively expanded in 1764. A walkway stretches from the castle to the Klausenkapelle chapel, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Meschede region. The entire complex is privately owned and therefore not open to the public.
