Off to the 'holy' spring
Not far from the hamlet of Heiligenborn is the hiking parking lot of the same name, which is a good starting point for exploring the beautiful Ilse Valley. Not only an entry point to the Lahn hiking trail is possible, but also the Rothaarsteigis also accessible from here. Children can follow in the footsteps of the red-haired goblin "Little Rothaar" on a fabulous 2 km circular tour. From the parking lot, you can also hike to Kompass, the highest elevation in southern Wittgenstein, or set off on a 4 km hike to Eschengraben(A 6). The A 7 (7 km) is the start of a beautiful tour that initially heads towards Jagdberg. From here, the trail leads a short distance along the Rothaarsteig not far from the border with Hessen to the legendary Ilse spring. Even in the Middle Ages, special powers were attributed to this spring. Sick people and pilgrims came from near and far in the hope of finding relief from the healing waters.
Further hiking options:
It is possible to join the SGV hiking trail "Feudingen-Ilsequelle" (9 km) as well as the Laaspher circular trail (marker: L in a circle). This runs in 3-4 day stages around the town of Bad Laasphe and gives a good insight into the landscape.
