Clouds hang over the valley - the sun is shining on the Kahler Asten. Not a rare phenomenon on the almost 842-metre-high mountain. After Kyrill, the views on clear days are almost like those in the Alps. The Berggashof with its observation tower is located on the summit. All around it is a real Hochheide hiking area.
Due to the climate, which is characterized by Atlantic westerly winds, the German Weather Service has set up a weather station there - visitors can visit it:
Guided tour of the weather station
The second highest mountain in North Rhine-Westphalia is also popularly known as the "father of the Sauerland mountains". The Kahler Asten is 842 m high and is also famous for its weather station. You can take a closer look at it on a guided tour. Graduate geographer Meinolf Pape will take you behind the scenes.
