The largest dam in the Siegerland region, which went into operation in 1972, is now not only a habitat for rare animals, but also a popular local recreation destination. The area around the dam offers the attentive observer extraordinary insights into nature and the local wildlife at all times of the year. Every now and then you can spot unusual bird species such as cormorants, goosanders, grey herons, little grebes, tufted ducks, great crested grebes, black storks and ospreys.
The 10 km long, asphalted circular trail is ideal for hiking, inline skating, jogging, walking and cycling. Visitors are rewarded with magnificent views of the dam. Numerous benches along the trail invite you to linger. Information boards and diagrams explain the formation of the dam and the life of the animals and plants in their natural environment.
After a pleasant stay in nature, the Landhaus Heinrichshöh is the perfect place to stop for a break. Visitors interested in technology can take a look inside the dam during regular guided tours. In addition to information about the water balance, details about the construction of the Obernautalsperre are also provided.
