In 1324 Bawenole inferiore is mentioned in a document for the first time. Around 1433, the von Plettenberg family comes into half co-ownership of Bamenohl through marriage. During the Thirty Years' War, Adam Vogt von Elspe erects another building, today's east wing IN GREAT KRIG, STRYT AND WIDELINESS, as it says on a stone slab. The niece of the last bailiff of Elspe married Karl Wilhelm von Plettenberg - Heeren in 1788, whose grandson Carl Gisbert Wilhelm gave the house its present form between 1851 and 1870: he had the moat filled in, connected the two buildings, erected a tower and laid out the English landscape park.
Subsequently, Haus Bamenohl became the summer residence of the von Plettenberg family. After the Second World War, it is first used as refugee accommodation, then a retirement home moves in. In 1967, severe damage to the building structure is discovered, making further use impossible for twenty years. After another two decades, the renovation work is completed in 2006 and the buildings shine in new splendor.
The ensemble of castle, courtyard grounds and park with ponds is a listed building and is still occupied by the Barons of Plettenberg and is therefore not open to the public without prior arrangement. However, rooms for exclusive events are available on the first floor. Since spring 2019, there is also a vacation apartment in the main building.

Renting of a vacation apartmentHighlight of the 70sqm large self-contained apartment on the 1st floor is the spacious fireplace room with a view into the park - besides it has a bedroom, a small kitchen and a bathroom with shower and toilet.
