"an all-too-great power is overpowered by its own dimensions". This quote from Martin Luther adorns the 7.50 m high, seemingly unstable sculpture "The Crozier" by Heinrich Brummack. The crozier is one of the episcopal insignia of the Roman Catholic Church. It was awarded to the Benedictine abbey of Grafschaft Monastery in 1072 as a reminder of care. Over the centuries, it increasingly became a symbol of ecclesiastical power. With the expropriation of church property as part of secularization in 1803, this secular influence - and with it the crosier of the monastery - was lost.
2,613 kg of aluminium was used to erect the sculpture, which forms a landmark visible from afar on the road between Schmallenberg and Bad Berleburg.
