The bizarre rocky landscape of the Felsenmeer was created by the collapse of karst caves. Wildly jagged rocks are partly overgrown with old beech trees. In 2005, the Hermeraner Felsenmeer geotope was awarded the title of "Germany's most important geological monument".

The geotope, which lies above the valley floor, is divided into three areas: the Large Rock Sea, the Paradise and the Small Rock Sea. The nature reserve is around 700 m long, 100 to 200 m wide and accessible all year round on paved paths.
