On December 16, 1944, Siegen's city center was almost completely destroyed by a bombing raid. In the triangle between Löhrstraße, Obere Metzgerstraße and Hainstraße, where the guilds of tanners and butchers had settled in the Middle Ages, a few slate-roofed half-timbered houses remained intact. The houses, which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, were restored in the 1980s with great care and attention to detail and today form a cohesive ensemble of buildings that is a real gem in terms of urban planning. The half-timbered buildings, slated roofs, façades and cobblestones are characteristic of the area. The Pfarrer-Ochse-Platz next to St. Mary's Church, where the Old Town Festival takes place every September, is particularly charming. The Altstadt is part of the city tour.
