The church is something special, because since the introduction of the Reformation in Bad Berleburg by Count Johann in 1534, there have hardly been any Catholics here. This only changed in 1816 as a result of the Congress of Vienna, which made the town the seat of government under the rule of the Prussian king.
As a result, many administrative staff came to Bad Berleburg, who went to great lengths to attend mass in the neighboring Sauerland town of Grafschaft. This became too much for the new mayor in 1834 and so, on Pentecost of the same year, the first Catholic mass in 300 years was celebrated in the town - in the newly built town hall.
The steadily growing congregation soon bought a house on Goetheplatz as a meeting place, but soon this too was too small and in 1868 they moved to a "little church" on Schlossstraße.
Shortly after the parish was elevated to a full parish in 1896, it acquired a large plot of land in the heart of the city, but due to the two world wars, the new church could not be built and consecrated until 1953/54.
