Wittgenstein Castle is an extensive castle complex that is mentioned in 1187 as "Widegensteyne" castle. Around 1100, the ancestors of the later Counts of Wittgenstein crossed the border of the Rothaargebirge from the north and built a new castle on the already formerly fortified hill, today's Schlossberg, 484 m above sea level, above the confluence of the Laasphe and Lahn rivers.
In 1950, Wittgenstein Castle was made available to a teaching institute with boarding school, founded by Mr. Josef Kämmerling. Since then, Wittgenstein Castle has served as a commercial and administrative building (secondary school and grammar school). Wittgenstein Castle has been owned by the Kämmerling family since 2002. In addition to the school, Wittgenstein Castle also hosts operetta performances in the rose garden, concert evenings and civil wedding ceremonies. For private events, the old wine cellar is available for 150 people, the Lindenplatz for 100 people, the Rose Garden for 200 people and the Alexanderplatz for 500 people. It is now also possible to book rooms in the castle.
The annual highlight is the traditional Christmas market on the 1st Friday in December.
The entire castle complex was entered in the list of monuments of the town of Bad Laasphe on 24.04.1984.
