The "Zionsberg" deaconess community is the only Protestant community in the Paderborn/Höxter diocese that is comparable to a religious order. In keeping with Catholic religious orders, its members also vow obedience, poverty and celibacy. Since the early 1950s, the sisters had initially been involved in diaconal work for Protestant refugees, in addition to running a nursing prep school. Declining numbers of students forced a reorientation in the 1970s. The sisters decided on the path of praying and working together and founded the deaconess community "Zionsberg" in 1971 - the name underlines the house's connection with Israel. The school was closed in 1972. Since 1973, the deaconesses have opened their house to people seeking inner contemplation and silence.
