The Ahsewiesen nature reserve with its wet meadows and floodplains is home to one of the largest breeding populations of curlews in the district of Soest. Other typical breeding bird species include lapwing, shoveler, little grebe, water rail, marsh harrier, meadow pipit and reed warbler. Many migratory birds use the large areas of flooded grassland in winter and spring. These include wading bird species such as wood sandpipers or
greenshank and duck species such as pintail, wigeon and teal.

The species-rich smooth oat and wet meadows provide a habitat for rare plant species. The meadow silau is found in the wetter, but not wet meadows, but felt sedge, brook carnation, narrow-leaved hornwort and strawberry clover also grow here.

Directions

The Ahsewiesen nature reserve can be explored on foot or by bike. From the parking lot, head into the village of Hultrop. There, turn south at the Northoff distillery. The "Auenland" cycle route takes you to both observation points. To the east of the area is a nine-metre-high observation tower, which offers a fantastic panoramic view of the protected area. A farm track takes you to the observation hut in the west. Both observation points can only be reached via steps. The path between them leads along wet meadows.
