The Hellwegbörde is an important breeding area for many farmland birds - such as the rare Montagu's harrier - but also for partridges, quails and skylarks. In the Schledden valleys and quarries, the abundance of flowers in the nutrient-poor meadows attracts many butterflies and grasshoppers.

You can start the circular cycle route through the Hellwegbörde at the "Mythos Stein" park, an old limestone quarry, south of Geseke. It leads along the Westerschledde and the Ehringerfeld forest to the Haarstrang near Oestereiden. At Westereiden, it crosses the Pöppelschetal valley in two places before descending along the Erwitte quarries back down into the Unterbörde. Here, the route passes the Muckenbruch nature reserve.
