Just under 300 meters in altitude have to be conquered to reach the ridge of the Rothaargebirge near Schanze. The famous Rothaarsteig trail crosses here and attractive gastronomy awaits you. For many years, the best mountain bikers were sought on this route in a mountain time trial.
After the start at the village square in Grafschaft, the ascent begins quite moderately out of the village. It doesn't actually get much steeper until you reach the summit. Special signposting shows you how far it is to the finish and how many meters in altitude are still waiting for you.
A rescue point system has been installed throughout the region (Soest district, Hochsauerlandkreis, Märkischer Kreis, Olpe district and Siegen-Wittgenstein district). Rescue points can be found on the information boards at the junctions of the Südwestfalen cycle network.
Rail connection in Lennestadt-Altenhundem or Meschede. From there, continue by bus to Grafschaft.
The ascent begins right in the center of Schmallenberg-Grafschaft. Follow the signs in the direction of Schanze.As Schanze is a popular excursion destination, especially on nice weekends, you can expect increased car and motorcycle traffic.
