Cereals, but also potatoes and vegetables are grown on the productive loess soils of the Hellwegbörde. The development of an agriculturally shaped cultural landscape began as early as the Neolithic Age. Rows of fruit trees, avenues, hedges and small woods structure the open fields. The Hellwegbörde is an important breeding and resting area for numerous bird species and has been designated as a bird sanctuary. The region is also named after its location on the important long-distance trade route and royal road, the "Hellweg", whose origins date back to pre-Roman-Germanic times.
