The Nikolaikirche with the little crown on the top of the church tower is the best-known symbol of the city of Siegen, visible from afar. The history of this church dates back to the Middle Ages. The church dominates the silhouette of the town on the Siegberg and is located halfway up between the hilltop projection facing the valley and the hilltop with the Upper Castle directly above the market square and town hall square. The market square and the Nikolaikirche are parts of the medieval new town, which was built around 1224.

Architecturally, the Nikolaikirche is a special feature, as it is the only Romanesque hall hexagon north of the Alps. The hexagonal hall is connected to a rectangular choir and a semi-circular apse. Researchers now assume that the entire complex was built together and was given its final form in the first quarter of the 14th century.

The name Nikolai Church is derived from the patron saint of the church, St. Nicholas. He was venerated as the patron saint of burghers and merchants and fits well in the vicinity of the market and town hall. In 1658, Prince Johann Moritz zu Nassau-Siegen gave the golden crown to the town as a gift to prove his power and presented a valuable Inca bowl to be used for baptisms, which is still in use today.

The church was rebuilt several times throughout its history and was almost completely destroyed in the bombing raid on December 16, 1944 during the Second World War. Only the crown on the top of the church tower survived the attack. The Nikolaikirche was put back into service in 1954. In the 1970s, it was given its current appearance in the colors white and oxblood red, which were renewed in 2002. In the 1990s, the original crown had to be removed for conservation reasons, so today there is a copy at the top of the church, while the original hangs in the entrance area in the church tower.

Parish life is characterized by central and decentralized offerings in the church and in the Altstadt parish hall. The church is traditionally a place of church music and home to the Siegen choir (www.kantorei-siegen.de). During opening hours, the church offers an opportunity for reflection. In general: opposite the town hall and market, the Nikolaikirche plays an important public role, which the parish tries to take into account. (Text: Evangelical parish of Nikolai)
