Follow the bat...
A cyclist in front of the sketched silhouette of the Fledermaustunnel - the 689 m long highlight of the SauerlandRadring is the logo and signpost of the slightly hilly circular tour through the Sauerland. Most of the route from Schmallenberg to the Fledermaustunnel runs along a former railroad embankment. These historical roots can be seen again and again in various relics along the route. The short version (54km) of the SauerlandRadring turns off the main route in Kückelheim and then swings over the gentle hills of the Schmallenberg Hawerland back to the "stocking town" of Schmallenberg.
Note: The Fledermaustunnel is closed from November to April and is entirely for the bats that hibernate there. During this time, the signposted, somewhat more challenging winter bypass applies.
Always follow the signposts for the short version of the SauerlandRadring. Attention!1) Follow the cycle path behind the second traffic circle (Alltagsmenschen) between the Netto supermarket and the sports center.2) The small town of Eslohe is located between Bremke and Kückelheim. There are numerous places to stop for refreshments to recharge your batteries for the onward journey.3) On the way to the Fledermaustunnel from Eslohe, you will cross a high railroad bridge.4) You cross the Fledermaustunnel and cycle back through it and finally reach the starting point of the shortened SauerlandRadring before the high railroad bridge. Here you will find the first yellow signpost on your left, which leads you under the above-mentioned bridge to the village of Kückelheim. From this point, follow the marked route back to Schmallenberg.5) After approx. 2.4 km, turn sharp left off this main road and cycle over a steep (approx. 1. km steeply uphill) ridge to Isingheim.6) In Isingheim, turn right towards Lüdingheim as far as Niederlandebeck.7) In Niederlandebeck, make sure you find the road sign, turn left and pass the "Hamme" tree nursery.8) Then turn right and you will see a no traffic sign. Don't be confused by this sign, you have the right of passage as far as Arpe.9) Through Arpe, pay attention to the road sign and you will reach the sports field. Turn right here and continue along a gravel road to Selkentrop.10) Through Selkentrop, pay attention to the road sign and you have the right of passage over the private property of the farm. (Say hello to the farmer)11) In Felbecke, cycle past the church and onto the cycle path towards Schmallenberg, which runs to the left of the road.
The Schmallenberger Sauerland Tourismus recommends that you fully charge your battery during your stay in the restaurants in Eslohe or Schmallenberg in order to be able to complete the 2nd part of the route. You will find further refreshment stops in Bad Fredeburg, Dorlar and Arpe.
